Microsoft Copilot at a glance
Microsoft Copilot is the umbrella name for Microsoft's AI assistants, which are built on generative AI and integrated directly into the tools you already work in. Copilot can analyze data, write drafts, summarize meetings and documents, and automate repetitive tasks. With the introduction of agents, Copilot has also grown from a personal assistant into a platform where organizations build their own AI solutions on top of the company's data and processes.
Microsoft 365 Copilot – AI in Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams
Microsoft 365 Copilot is integrated into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams and draws on the organization's own data through Microsoft Graph. That makes the assistant far more relevant than a general-purpose chatbot: it knows your documents, emails and meetings.
On the other hand, this places demands on data security. Access control, sensitivity labels and cleaning up shared files are a prerequisite for a responsible rollout, which is why administration and governance are just as important a discipline as using the tool itself.
Agents and Copilot Studio
With Copilot Studio and Agent Builder, organizations can build their own AI agents that answer questions, automate processes and integrate with business systems. Agents range from simple knowledge assistants and process agents in Teams to autonomous agents that carry out multi-step tasks on their own.
This is where Copilot moves from personal productivity to real business solutions, and where the need for architecture, governance and responsible AI really comes into play.
GitHub Copilot for developers
GitHub Copilot has helped developers with code completions since 2021, and today it is a full AI partner in development work, with chat, code review and agent mode, where Copilot solves well-defined tasks in the codebase on its own.
For development teams, it is no longer just about writing code faster, but about building AI-assisted development into workflows, testing and quality assurance. A solid foundation in Git and GitHub also makes it easier to get the full benefit of Copilot's suggestions in practice.
Security Copilot and security
Microsoft Security Copilot brings generative AI to security work. It works with Microsoft Defender, Sentinel, Intune and Entra and helps security teams investigate incidents, prioritize alerts and respond faster to threats.
At the same time, Copilot is itself a security topic: a rollout requires a clear picture of which data assistants and agents can access, and how that access is controlled.
