Power BI's reporting universe

Power BI is a major investment for Microsoft and has become an extremely popular reporting platform.  Users get an elegant way to filter data and navigate the report.

It comes with a range of built-in visualizations - with the option to import additional visualizations from Microsoft’s Power BI ecosystem in the cloud. Calculations in the reports are built on DAX – the language of the data engine.

The underlying data

Power BI’s data foundation is built on Dimensional Modeling, a standard that is also used in Data Warehouses, among other places. Power BI lets you import data from many different sources to populate the data model.

Power BI service

All Power BI reports and their underlying data are published either to the Power BI service in the cloud or to an on-premises report server. Administration of the Power BI service lets you manage users and access to individual reports, including which data they are allowed to see in their respective reports.
