Description
SQL is much more than just syntax. It's about asking the right questions of your data and getting answers you can actually trust. In this advanced SQL course, we build on your basic skills and focus on strategy, structure and understanding. You learn to write SQL that is correct, clear and easy to maintain, and above all, how to choose the right approach to a task.
The course focuses on creating a solid, reliable data foundation, choosing a clear strategy for your queries, and structuring your code so it is transparent both to you and to others. We work with practical cases where you put theory into practice and build concrete skills in advanced SQL.
Among other things, you will work with:
- UNION, OUTER JOIN, CROSS JOIN and other ways to combine data sets
- CTEs (Common Table Expressions) to make complex queries easier to follow
- CASE and COALESCE to build flexible logic and handle NULL values
- HAVING, EXISTS and subqueries for filtering, performance and advanced analysis
You also learn to read and understand existing SQL, known as reverse engineering, and get better at building solutions that both perform well and provide insight. Many exercises are about solving real-world problems with clear requirements for data structure and correctness, including handling missing values and cleansing data directly in SQL.
More and more people ask whether it's even necessary to write SQL yourself when generative AI can help. It's true that tools like ChatGPT can generate code, but that is exactly why it's essential to understand what happens behind the scenes: how the data is structured, how to choose the right approach, and how to make sure your results are actually useful.
So in this course, you don't just learn to write more advanced SQL. You learn to think critically and in a structured way about your data. That understanding is what enables you to use AI more effectively and to spot when things go wrong.
We work with vendor-neutral SQL syntax, so what you learn can be used directly in, for example, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM Db2, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB and other database servers.

- An efficient method for conditional data manipulation
- Build flexible logic directly into your SQL queries
- Use CASE in all relevant SQL clauses: SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, ORDER BY
