The open standard TCP/IP is the foundation of the internet. TCP/IP started out as a UNIX networking protocol, but today it is used everywhere.
We hope to see you in a networking course at SuperUsers!

What is networking?
A network is a collection of devices, such as computers, smartphones and servers, that are connected and able to exchange data.
These devices communicate using network protocols, which define the rules for how data is transmitted and received.
TCP/IP and IP stand the test of time
SuperUsers will always be dedicated to networking, and TCP/IP is one of our main focus areas. It is remarkable how open standards provide stability and functionality.
Just imagine if a new version of IP or TCP/IP came out every other year. The availability of the internet would be critically threatened.

Core networking components and protocols
The most important network components
Network components contribute to a network's functionality, security and efficiency.
Some of the most important network components are:
-
Routers: Routers direct data traffic between different networks and determine the optimal paths for data to follow.
-
Switches: Switches control data traffic in local area networks (LANs) by determining which device should receive the data and by segmenting the network.
-
Firewalls: Firewalls protect the network against unauthorized access and ensure that only approved data passes through.
The core network protocols
Network protocols are the rules and standards that govern how devices on a network communicate and exchange data.
Some of the most important network protocols are:
-
TCP/IP: Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is the heart of the internet and provides a standard for data transmission over the internet. It consists of a set of rules that govern data transfer and network communication.
-
DNS: Domain Name System (DNS) converts domain names (e.g. superusers.dk) into IP addresses, which allows devices to find each other on the internet.
-
HTTP/HTTPS: HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and its secure counterpart, HTTPS, are used to transfer data between web browsers and web servers. They make it possible to create and view websites.
