C# and .NET in brief
What is .NET?
Microsoft .NET is a framework that lets programs run across platforms without having to compile them for each specific platform.
This of course requires .NET to be installed on the platform in question. You can think of .NET as an abstraction layer between the operating system and the applications.
CIL – Compiling the programs
For programs to run on .NET, they must be compiled at development time into bytecode (CIL – Common Intermediate Language, defined in the CLI (Common Language Infrastructure) specification.
CLR – Running the programs
CLR (Common Language Runtime) is the virtual machine that, at runtime, handles the JIT (Just-In-Time) compilation of the CIL bytecode into machine code.
.NET and platforms
In 2024, Microsoft released .NET CORE, an open source version of .NET. It can be ported to any platform.
