Description
AI is moving into the database in earnest. Instead of pulling data out into separate ML platforms, modern SQL platforms can now handle vectors, embeddings and semantic search directly in the data layer. That means shorter pipelines, less data movement and an architecture where AI functionality becomes part of the database itself rather than a bolt-on. DP-800 is Microsoft's official course for developers and data professionals who need to build these kinds of solutions on SQL Server, Azure SQL and SQL databases in Microsoft Fabric.
The first part of the course is about building a solid database foundation. You design tables, indexes and programmability objects, and you write advanced T-SQL with CTEs, window functions and structured error handling. You also get hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot and Fabric Copilot, so you can speed up the development work itself.
The second part takes solutions from development to production. You learn to protect data with encryption, dynamic data masking and row-level security, to tune performance using execution plans, Query Store and dynamic management views, and to automate deployment with CI/CD pipelines based on SQL Database Projects. You also work with Data API Builder so databases can be exposed as REST and GraphQL endpoints for applications.
The final part is the AI core of the course. You design intelligent search with full-text search and vector search, integrate AI models and embeddings directly in T-SQL, and build Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) entirely in SQL. This architectural angle is what sets DP-800 apart from traditional database courses: AI lives inside the database, not next to it.
After the course, you can:

The course is relevant if you work as a database developer, data engineer, data scientist or DBA and want to extend your T-SQL practice with modern AI capabilities. It assumes you are already comfortable with T-SQL and basic database concepts.
